Can they do that without telling you specifically which copyrighted works you are allegedly distributing?

Yeah this seems strange, unless you've violated their (or someone they represent) copyrighted material how can they tell you to take down the site? Surely if they don't 'own' any of the music on the site all they can do is report you to the people who do.

There needs to be some sort of system setup where producers can opt in/out of a scheme which allows your music to be released for promotional purposes online. What's the difference a mix where each record is on for under 1 min between audio clips on record stores? I bet quite a few smaller labels and artists would do so.

I'd say 75% of music I've bought in the past year has been stuff I've heard on mixes. It's a real shame :(

I'd suggest caution when putting the site back up, they may not take to kindly to asking the same people again and again.
