Folks never saw a dead horse the didn't want to beat.  I have heard
'word is bond' going back to   my middle school days in the early 70s.
I first heard 'word is born' here on this thread, and never heard the
Run DMC song.  The difference between me and Tom is that I see things
like that and move on to the other 16384 things competing for my
attention, and Tom thought a Brit needed correcting on it.

That's kind of a category error in my book, because UK English isn't
US English, and UK English is furthermore comprised of 20 or 30
distinct regional variations, complete with their own idioms, cliches
and pronunciation rules.  People could have started saying 'word is
born' and assigned it its own context, meaning and emotional tone 30
years ago, and I'd never know.

Of course one of the true perquisites of being a list admin is that I
get to declare this thread dead, after having the last word.
