JT: "i think music that is created from scratch is more valuable because it is more personal and arguably takes a little more imagination. or at least a certain form of imagination. i guess some people have a really broad imagination of how to cut up samples and shit, but it's just not the same....instrumental music just ahs more potential to introduce something "new" in my opinion, i know some would argue, but i think digital manipulation and all that has some pretty finite limits."
i would probably agree that music created from scratch is more valuable (to wit Fatboy Slim), however i think there may be room in this definition to include sampling artists (i think you would agree with me here JT?, perhaps with someone like MMann...) who construct interesting new music from stolen chunks of previously recorded music. it seemed such a powerful and liberating force 10/15 years ago (sampling, digital revolution, that is). i guess i don't like to linger on method too much - i.e. 'if it's good, it's good.' Having said that I know that i've listened to records before and gone through the following process : 1) hey i love that track X, 2) hearing the original that track X heavily sampled and thinking, jesus the original is far superior i don't like X anymore... and finally 3) realising that actually i like them both and that X has added an extra angle - like a remix (there is an issue of properly crediting the original producer). JT: "i dunno it's definitely idealistic but i think it's a good thing, . there's room for all sorts of music." amen to that. take care, H _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com This e-mail and any attachment is for authorised use by the intended recipient(s) only.
