NEW YORK -- When Richie Hawtin was sneaking out of his house and into
clubs to DJ, he was stuck using whatever equipment was already at the
club.

Like any good DJ, he was always on the lookout for new tunes to spin, so
he began collecting music from local record stores.

As the years progressed, he found himself toting around 200 albums and 200
pounds of equipment. (That's 90 kilograms to Canadians like Hawtin.)

Those days are over. Today, Hawtin scratches out his dance tunes in clubs
around the nation using a customized, 5-pound laptop created by N2IT
Development. The computer hooks up to a traditional DJ turntable through a
set-top box interface.
