purchasing a phone directly from google allows one to cut out the network operator. (to some extent.) in theory the cyanogenmod phone is less tied to google. sadly, it doesn't bluetooth-le, and i need that. all options appear to me to boil down to walled gardens. unless you build it yourself. - erik
