i dont really know, i have a few ideas on what i might be but i wont
speculate (for a change)

As a workaround you could use abiword and change to RTF when you
are finished (abiword does not yet really support .doc its
just a renamed .rtf but you probably know that already)

Backup .bak,
but Abiword can be configured to use any extension you like
