Well, if you can manage employers' shocked face while seeing you, trying to make you feel horrible, just because they didn't know before that you are blind, I think is ok not to specify it. On the other hand, most of us have studied in schools for blind or visually impaired people, how is one supposed to avoid writing it? I am personally for writing it, even if the perspective is bit limited. If they do not want blind people amongst their employees', they will surely manage not to get you, with or without your specification in the c v. I doubt hiding it really brings much but contrary. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sameer" <sala...@gawab.com>

Dear Amit,

Your point about employers being aware about the disability is valid when the job is reserved for the disabled.

My query was whether we should indicate our disability on our CV when applying for a job in the open category - where there is no reservation. In such cases employers may not be aware of our disabilities if we do not mention it in our CV. In such cases, some of our friends have been not allowed to appear for interviews after reaching the place of interview because the prospective employers did not know that they were blind.

As I have tried to indicate in my previous communication, if the employers are ready to call the persons with disabilities for appearing in the interview, obviously they would be aware about how a disabled person, say Visually Challenged person, can work in the Office with the support of various screen reading Application and other assistive technologies. If an employer is not aware of how a Visually Impaired worker can work in the company, they would simply not even think to open the position and arrange the interview for us.

My personal experience is that not mentioning the disability in CV/Resume may not give an opportunity to the potential employer to decide whether to call the candidate for the interview in the first place. There's no point in going to an interview and failing due to the interviewer not being aware of your disability. Not every employer may be able to provide you with vision aids at workplace. Mentioning about your disability, on the contrary, helps a willing employer to prepare for including a differently abled candidate in
the work-force.

I had been selected at four different places (not willing to point out on the list) in the initial stage of my career and then rejected simply due to those employers not being able to grasp that I can work comfortably with a little adjustments to the screen display. Yes, those days I was not aware of screen readers and even if I were, they seemed not in a position to acquire
it in their organizations.

After such unfavourable experiences, I decided to include my disability in
my Resume. When I was called for an interview from Mphasis, my current
employer, I first enquired whether the HR person calling me knows that I am
visually challenged. His consent helped me know that I would not have to
face a failure due to disability and I went for the interview.

Its good to disclose what you are right in the first place. Of course, this
may invite some bias but that's inevitable.

Zujar...

I endorse to your opinion, Shadab.

Generally the employers specify the vacant position for persons with
disabilities. HR officials manage the database in some organizations in case

they have any disabled employee. So it barely matters to disclose the
disability in CV.

Another fact is that there are very a few companies where the disabled
employees are hired directly by the employers in India. And even if they
wish to appoint the disabled workers, they clearly mention about it, as I
have said in above line. So it is self-explanatory for both the side,
employers and candidates that only persons with disabilities may apply for
the mentioned position.

More often than not, private employers call the applicants for the interview

through any organization or consultancy. In this process, employers are
already informed about the disability of the candidate.

I also believe that disability is neither our quality nor any poor-quality, and, employers hire us not for our disability, but for our ability. Hence,
to broach the note on the disability inResume, is not necessary in my
opinion.

On the other hand, seeing the trend of unacceptability, I am afraid -
there is a possibility that the moment the employer would read about
disability, he will reject the CV.

Hiding the disability, or to put it more appropriately, not mentioning
it in the CV should also be taken into consideration. If the CV is
shortlisted, the candidate will get an opportunity to talk up the
disability and demonstrate his abilities provided that he has a
laptop.

Vamshi sir you have wisely advised that the tasks that we can perform
using the assistive technology should be mentioned. But you will
readily agree that still there is a lot of ignorance about the
technology we use, and I know that it is hard to make others
understand that we are quite comfortable with computers.

This was a contrasting opinion, but bringing it forth was necessary so
that we can examine the pros and cons of the thing.

Hi mr. Sameer,
Undoubtedly you've raised an important issue, and it seems that we're
all agreeing on the fact that the disability should be disclosed.
However, as you've said, the interviewer tends to skip such
information, so it seems no use of mentioning your disability.
I personally think that it should be highlighted in such a way, that
it could attract the attention at 2nd or 3rd glance of your CV.
Asterisk it, bold it, but it should stand separate of cv's format.
Thanks,
Akhilesh.

To add to the discussion, you can also enlist contact info of a few blind
persons who could be reffered with a brief description of the work
profile.
Pl do take care in, first, seeking confirmation from the persons reffered
and that they are also persuing an occupation similar to the job in
question.
This will help in easing the concerns and apprehensiveness in their mind.

Hi,

I second Subramani sir's opinion.

Besides, exposing our disability before the employer is inevitable.
And by hiding it in the CV, we are only postponing the inevitable.

When we mention about our disability in the CV, we should make sure
that we also mention the coping strategies like mobility, assistive
technology etc. And also, as we know the job we are going to do, we
should write how we think we are fit for handling that particular job
despite the disability.

Leave the standard format of CV and customise it to each and every
job applied for.

Since in some cases you may be the first disabled ccandidate to be
appearing for the job, hiding your disability would also imply you are not comfortable about your disability, which would never leave you in a
stronger position to convince your potential employer that your
disability won't come in the way of your ability to perform. Besides if you are not comfortable about it, the employee will have all the good
reasons of not feeling comfortable hiring you.

Hiding it is hardly going to help you, so mention it voluntarily and
show that you have done a good job of dealing with the ccondition
yourself. Surely some employees will see the logic of such an argument and -with all your prowess with the PC and internet- may even think of
giving you a chance.

Dear Friends,

We recently had a discussion on whether we should disclose our
disability
during the ongoing national census. I wish to know the members'
viewpoints
on disclosure of disability in job interviews in cases where there is
no

reservation.

I seek the members' views on the following queries.

1.. Whether we should disclose our disability in the CV sent to
prospective employers, job consultants or posted on various job
portals?
2.. In case we decide to disclose our disability in the CV, where
should
it be disclosed? Assuming the CV has 4 sections - General Information, Educational record, work experience & salary details, where should the
disability be disclosed & in what manner?
3.. In case we are called for a job interview, should we check in
advance
whether the company will be willing to consider us inspite of our
disability? This query is more relevant in case we have not disclosed
our
disability in the CV since some blind friends who had not disclosed
their
blindness were refused permission even to appear for the interview when
they
reached the employer's office. Also, it has been observed that inspite
of
disclosing disability, interviewers tend to skip over the information &
they
are surprised when they realize the interviewee is blind.

Seeking the learned members views on the above queries.

Regards
