As Aparajita explained, the intent of the embedded image in the email is to determine if an email was delivered and viewed. At best, it is imprecise but better than nothing. When the email is viewed as HTML and imaging loading is enabled, the server "knows" who viewed the email because of the arguments in the image request. If the email recipient does not view HTML emails or has downloading images turned off, the tracking does not work. In this particular case, since the email blast is to people who are clients, there is a greater chance that they will download images in emails. So far, of the 4,000 deliveries, 600 people have loaded the image and therefore probably viewed the message. Interestingly, the image has been requested 1,000 times indicating that some people viewed the message multiple times.
