Re: Another submission we could make: CNZ strategic plan CNZ: This is great commentary/critique on CNZ approach to funding , particularly in regards to digital media , I believe CNZ also could do well to disarm the steadfast rule on applications , also that artist's can/should use funds to buy there own equipment in this field as artists are not necessarily filmmakers, Perhaps it is worth defining to CNZ what artists in our respective areas are not. Am I revealing just how little I spend looking into these issues..?
Big Elephants: Also can see the value in that our institutions do need to think through how to best get the necessary equipment they need for artists. Most of the larger Elephants in the room are getting a bit better , and seem to come more often in their budget considerations. Still , a well paid individual(s) to assist seems a good and idea and could make for a very interesting part of a carrier for someone , especially considering how many institutions currently talk to each other and negotiate the sharing of equipment... ADA and the Elephants: Perhaps a discussion on what ADA members think institutions should be considering in this field (equipments) is a worthwhile task . I mean what are the most common needs , what are the specs etc to best present the work , are we going to stay with DVD's , maybe not , do we want Blu Ray or is that the next scrap heap waiting to happen ? Do we want files to run off mac min's or mp3 players...? If so what format? I am interested in the dream list of equipment as it exists and might become. This should include works that require web use/access and how artists would like to operate remotely to the site , this needs to be set up in a way that will not be denied by council run web security teams , this is the major parameter that our larger Elephants find themselves housed in. Anything else anyone can think of that is relevant I may have overlooked ? Bus: I like the modular/travelling/workshop/production facility/studio... can we add a basic library?? , ie a hard drive(s) that can plug in somewhere and present work out in the field, provide links to sites etc. Would the possibility of burning disks / leaving entire harddrives for schools perhaps be worthwhile , they are pretty cheap these days and can be updated over time , this does bring up the issue of censorship/rating however. But you know is just a thought. Trish your offer is awesome and would make for an interesting and fun experience I think. There would need to be a local co-ordinator who facilitated events, that takes budget, as does some form of national co-ordinator. In regions, the schools often have established communication infrastructure, these could be co-ordination points. It would be good to see something spread wide and throughout the country, predicated on a vision of reaching the widest possible community via electronic media and engaging with it. There would need to be interaction with groups outside of the art context - like the Linux groups that are every where. I don't have the gears -- but I have a 3-bdrm farmhouse with a nice outlook and two outside buildings, lots of lawn & 43 acres of paddocks around it if that might be useful. If someone wanted to help organise a bit of a summer camp there you'd be more than welcome. It's an hour south of Auckland in the country area of Miranda (the beach is mudflats & mangroves and international-traveller birds, but there is also the 'largest natural hotsprings in the southern hemisphere' (last i checked) nearby) and good fish and chips. :). //t. It would also be nice to find ways to strategically develop the cohesion that we have. Equipment does have all those known issues of coordination, storage & security, maintenance, updating, transport, and other logistics as has been discussed on the list around the lab idea earlier. To apply for funding one coordinator from one of these groups does seem an appropriately distributed approach. It would at minimum allow for these and other events/organisations to hold things off-grid in terms of institutional locales. The part I am not clear on is that with the huge variation of skill and knowledge sets that are often with particular people, and have a specific set of gear requirements to match, I am wondering whether there would be a set of stuff that be useful across these events/ networks/groups. What would that wish list look like? OK I better do the day job... ! Douglas? Your turn? ;) //t.
