I'm pleased there is no consensus over this strategic plan. Having
nothing to submit is a relief. If any of you want to put in
individual responses, they have a dinky form here (word document):

and more information about the whole thing here:

Somewhere there is a draft strategic plan. Its first sentence begins
"Creative New Zealand is not proposing any major changes..." so I
didn't bother reading further. Submissions are due on Friday.

Regarding last week's entertaining thread, it seems that the constant
theme behind the various wishes was a sort of postponement of art.
Nobody was talking about any work they might want to make, or their
reasons for making it, or processes, or any actual problems or
anything. It was all preconditions, stuff that needs to exist so that
art can begin, setting the stage for "content" to arrive. But as
artists we know it isn't like that: by definition, we have already
started.

It also seemed like everyone was thinking about somebody else, or at
least framing their thoughts that way. The labs will give new artists
a better social life; the bus will give country people an edifying
startle; the recycled computers will be used by someone without
laptops like ours.

It is good to want to be good, but everyone does that. What makes us
artists is that we make art, now, and if we make a submission, I think
it should focus on our actual needs in our existing practises. Nobody
else is going speak for us: they'll be upping their own greedy little
sectors.

What I could personally do with is more time to make work. Following
Marx or whoever, time is money, so I'm inclined to say that CNZ should
just give more money to artists. Forget capability building and
engagement in the arts and infrastructure and advocacy and audience
development and leadership and national identity and developing
potential and all that stuff. Just give us the money. Make it easier
to apply for and acquit from. Oh, and give some to ADA too.

Now maybe I'm just being a contrarian idiot. Or maybe I'm right. But
don't tell me. Fill out the form linked above and send it to
[email protected]. CC us if you want.
