Hi

Just give us the money. Make it easier
to apply for and acquit from. Oh, and give some to ADA too.

When you say "us", who do you mean? Are you proposing a more general submission such that ADA, as a group of artists, is given money to spend on their own
projects, whatever they may be, before the aquittal is due?

I think Douglas is meaning 'us' as in individual artists. He is, I think, arguing that as a strategy CNZ should be investing in artists them/ourselves, and that the processes of getting and acquitting funding should be easier. I don't think he's talking about ADA being funded on behalf of its member artists, and that certainly wouldn't make sense.

or... what are you saying douglas?
I think ADA should act as an artists' union in this
situation, not just another sector player.

That we should be agitating on behalf of artists? (which is a good point)

I'm not sure what you mean in relation to the acquittal Julian - doesn't the money always arrive and get spent before it is acquitted for?

Funding for ADA to further spread its reach, invest in itself, an ADA event,
perhaps a group exhibition, sounds more tenable however.

Indeed, and ADA does + has received money for this kind of thing several times now - a number of symposia, a book and the Clouodland exhibition at ISEA were all funded by CNZ + organised by the ADA trust board to support + promote the digital arts in + from Aotearoa. The trust will continue to do this, and we can and should have a specific conversation about projects that ADA itself could + should be doing

The thing is that this submission process, in my understanding, isn't about specific projects or specific project funding, it's about strategies that CNZ could + should be following in its support for the arts in new zealand - it's about CNZ not ADA, about strategies not specific projects.

If so bear in mind that not everyone that constitutes ADA is an artist, far from
it, it seems..

ADA includes artists, curators, educators, writers, and audiences (and most members occupy a number of those subject positions). The projects that ADA has organised and received funding for in the past has tended to cater for and support all of these practices in varying combinations, and that seems pretty ideal to me, personally (and to the ada trust I hope).

All said, a submission from ADA, in self-interest as an internally adminstered,
registered organisation, presents a strong position in itself.

Well, the ADA board will put together a submission on behalf of the board - the internally administered, registered organisation aspect of ADA.

What Douglas was suggesting though is I think more powerful than that alone. After the excellently involved + passionate discussion of the past week we have a fantastic collection of ideas + visions for aspects of practice + support in nz, and I don't think anyone would want to claim to be able to speak for all of those positions in any coherent manner.

So, please, everyone, send in a submission as a member of ADA, outlining whatever you believe to be the most productive strategy CNZ could possibly plan for. And as Douglas said, send it to the list as well if you like. Then we can all share + continue to spin this discussion off into whatever interesting pathways we can find.

If any of you want to put in
individual responses, they have a dinky form here (word document):

and more information about the whole thing here:

Somewhere there is a draft strategic plan. Its first sentence begins
"Creative New Zealand is not proposing any major changes..." so I
didn't bother reading further. Submissions are due on Friday.
