Hello,
I am a member of MLUG (Montreal LUG), and I have been lurking here for
some time now, following the discussions and whatnot.

Anyway, regarding the zope vs php issue.
Right now, I am the "current" webmaster for the LUG site (mlug.ca).
We are running Zope behing Apache, meaning that zope is acting more
or less like a cgi script that intercepts the requests and sends the
HTML out to Apache which serves it, I find that this a good thing, since
zope's HTTP server is not that secure or production-environment friendly.

I like the way Zope works, we looked at php[nuke|post|other solutions]
but decided to stick with zope because it really offered a wide
variety of "plugins" (Called "Zope Products" by the zope ppl).

You can find anything from caledars, discussion forums, polls...etc.
And if I can remember correctly, you can use PHP with zope (I'll have to
research that one), it can also connect to a wide variety of databases
including PostgerSQL, MySQL, Oracle....

Zope provides an extention to HTML (DTML), which is very similar to
Apache's SSI (server side includes), which I find very useful.

I never learned PHP, and that is why I was biased to Zope since the
beginning. There isn't that much to learn in Zope, you can use it to
server straight HTML pages if you want, but the users/group scheme
it implements is wonderful, you can have different users maintaining
different parts of the site, assign users to groups with different
security levels and authorizations...etc

I know that PHP can do all this, maybe more, maybe in a better way.
But I just like zope.

If you want to test it without committing any resources to it, you can
get a free account at freezope.org.

But I really think you should look twice into it, it is a good product.

Just my two cents... :)
