Well Damn Johnny, you done just blew up all the way, haven't you? lol First of all.. let me say this.. If you find yourself booked up and turning down editing jobs... PLEASE steer some of them this way.. (rents late, car's down, blah, blah, blah, lol). Now to your topic... I thought that premiere was starting to make inroads into a mac dominated field. Its just a strange prejudice that people have about editing software. You've seen a lot of my work, Johnny, and its all Premiere. Its too bad that the clients know just enough to be prejudice... Editing is an means to an end, and its the final product that's importat. A cut is a cut, a transition is a transition.. What you have in the end is what really matters. Maybe next time... when they ask you which you use, ask what difference does it make? That might give you an opportunity to educate them some... Perhaps remind them that 20 years no one would hardly buy foreign cars, not because they were better or worse, but just that they were different.. That PR guy for Adobe, the "adobe evangelist", I think his name is Daniel Brown (or something like that), may be able to provide you with some statistics, and/or other facts to help you deal with this type of potential client. And seriously Johnny, I could use some editing work if you're ever overwhelmed.... Frank Mixson
Johnny Wu <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: So, this is not technical but rather to hear your comments, most of the members here are using Adobe Premiere as your editing system, I think a few also uses as your editing tool as a freelance editor, I would love to hear your comment, I've posted this already at Adobe Premiere Pro Forum with little good response other than "buy fcp to satisfy the idiots then" mentality... Which I'm not here to bash either one or the other... Please read this and I surely would like to open this as a discussion, how we can, as an Adobe user, slowly help change the perception (not easy, but it's a possible, grass root effort)... Surely everyone on this list have heard of FCP and how G5+FCP have helped in many Hollywood films and some very successful independent filmmakers, commercials, etc. Very little we hear about how Premiere did the job (the most recent about Premiere was with Dust to Glory HD feature, but most we hear is FCP this FCP that). Not to mention, mose Universities/Technical schools in USA that have a communication department uses Mac and have FCP courses, Not much about Premiere... And I bet, some of the people who submitted to Adobe's design competition, most of them are using a Mac. :) Plus majority of graphic design, ad agency, etc are using Mac (including many of you in this forum got one, etc)... After a successful show/run with my latest film A Joker's Card with good critice reviews and winning a Telly Award, I've found myself standing in a position where 'EVERYONE' wants me to be associated with their project and everyone want me to help edit theirs, I get about 3-5 request a day via phone call or email. And out of these, about 80% of them asked "did you do it with FCP?" if I said no, they would be "oh, I want you to help me but you aren't using FCP, oh well, thanks" (these are paying gig). Then I got a HUGE list of crew/job available on, I transferred it to Microsoft Word... 131 pages, list pay/low pay/no pay jobs available in the USA that was posted with Mandy.com, I actually, went through all of them one by one reading and reading and with ALL of them that asks for editors that work in FCP or Avid, not one for Premiere... (let's leave Avid out for now... They are re-campaigning strongly to get their feet back to the industry game...) So, now finally I landed with a big project that would be a weekly 13 episode show, the client want HD after episode 6th, and I promised them it's not a problem... (either using JVC HD100 HDV first or by Nov 2005 - according to Panny, the Panasonic HVX200 will be available and I can go with 2 of those)... Because of this client, I went and checked on 'off the shelf' pricing for uncompressed HD editing system, Adobe have one for about $16k, Apple, incredibly speaking can have one (with more gadget added on than Adobe's offered) for $17k... And I can put one together myself for $6k (this my choice btw) :) So, here's what I got frustrated, I wanted to continue working with Adobe Premiere Pro, because it's really good, it evolved from the 4.0 when I used to work with and I'm not eager to re-learn a new tool. But I noticed I would easily increase my return investment if I go with FCP... It seems that the success of FCP is not only because of the company that sells it but also the fanatic users who loves it. Obviously if you ran into a Mac user, they always trying to put down your PC :) But that's a reason probably because they were proud of their baby... How many members of this forum is soo proud of their system and Adobe Premiere Pro that would actually telling EVERYONE fanatically speaking how great Premire Pro is? (without making comparison with any other software) and can show a reel to others? Of course, if you can't afford a MAC, you definetely will go with Premiere or Vegas, but sooner or later, many of them will switch to FCP because of the current trend within the industry, that eventually would kill Premiere's interest in the video production end due to smaller and smaller amoutn of users that will stick with it, and less they will find an interest to continue supporting it, evetually cease to exist... (the latest I hear directly from Apple's Sale is LOTR also used G5)... So, in a way, my point is lost ;) but I guessed what I'm trying to say is, if we want to keep Premiere Pro group grow, we can't rely to Adobe to spent millions to market and campaign alone. We, as a user, should also be fanatically proud of the program and spread it as fast as FCP can spread, the grass root effort would help increase awareness, visibility etc. And of course, we need filmmakers (indie) to make a lot of good films with Premiere and Adobe to continue encouraging celebrity filmmakers to utilize Premiere... And how would you cope with people who insisting FCP is MUCH better? After all, it's the person that does the wanter, tools are merely making it easier... But in REALITY world, we need tools that speed our work productivity with minimum lost of time...
