Sounds like what some capture drivers do when they
detect copy-protected video.
I had that problem with an nNidia analog capture card
that erroneously detected Macrovision on tapes I
recorded with a camcorder. The preview during capture
was fine but the software was secretly slapping a
solid white bar over the middle 3rd of the picture
that showed up during playback. The fix was to replace
one DLL with the last version that didn't do that.
But with firewire it's digital, so if it is wrongly
detecting some type of digital copy protection, I bet
the solution will be more difficult. (And some
programmer somewhere needs thwacked with a giant, Nerf cluebat...)
