This is because (at least, this is my understanding) one of the XP
poor-programming practices that Microsoft considers to be a security risk
is an XP application violating the documented use of Program Files. When
Vista came along this rule needed to be tightened up a bit. Because
Microsoft management insisted upon a certain amount of
backward-compatibility with old applications, the solution for Vista was to
create a pseudo-Program Files directory under each user account which is
used to fool incorrectly-written programs. An incorrectly written XP program
will think it is using Program Files, but the "real" Program Files directory
is protected and not accessible to applications; the OS gives them this
special fake Program Files. In the future this fake Program Files may be
eliminated.

Just by way of explanation.

Hi Noor,

 I was at first very
alarmed when the files that SHOULD have appeared in the Program Files
folder, such as my Adobe apps, were nowhere to be found.

Knowing that they had to be SOMEWHERE, I looked in Windows Explorer and
discovered that while Vista had set up a Program Files folder-- which
was completely empty-- it had also set up a folder called "Program Files
(x86)", and this is where all my missing apps were hiding. .Shoshanna
