Right (decoding them live isn't a big deal these days), and they also can 
find a GOP on disk immediately if you jump a large distance at once.  At 
least that's likely, I've never coded anything GOP related.

Yep, they're stored in whatever you have in Preferences -> Scratch Disks -> 
"Media Cache Files" (as .mpgindex).

There's also .pek (I guess audio peak) files for quick waveform drawing, and 
.cfa files (ConFormed Audio).
