I've never used Prism Video Converter. Can it be that PVC is writing
.AVI files with no video compression (codec) resulting in large files?
Using GSpot (http://gspot.headbands.com/ <http://gspot.headbands.com/> )
to read the resulting .AVI file will verify that.

I had a similar issue with VirtualDub where it converted .MPG files to
.AVI files with no video compression, so a 30-second .AVI file would be
917 MB. I had to go through the extra step of importing the uncompressed
.AVI file into Premiere Pro and writing it back out as an .AVI file
(with encoding) and the size went down 108 MB making it playable with no
stuttering.

MPEG Streamclip (http://www.squared5.com <http://www.squared5.com> )
should be able to convert an .MP4 file to .AVI with encoding. (It does
not work for me probably because I have QuickTime Alternative installed,
so I have to bring the file over to the Mac and use QuickTime Pro to
convert it to .AVI and bring it back to the PC. This sounds cumbersome,
but at least it works all the time in my tight-deadline production
environment.)

Incidentally, I just tried to download and install Prism Video Converter
and chose MainConcept DV Video Encoder for the encoding options. But
attempting to convert an .MP4 file results with an "Error during the
conversion process" message. This may be due to having QuickTime
Alternative mentioned earlier.

I was thinking exactly the way you are, and using a program called
"Prism Video Converter", I converted all the files from MP4 to AVI, but
when I did, the files became HUGE, and the system would barely play them
at all, only with a slow-motion-style frame-by-frame
click-along....TOTALLY UNUSABLE.
