I often record live events and these JVC's put about 14 minutes into a 3.7GB
file, which is their maximum. Then they create a new file and continue
recording. Usually there are no lost frames in between files. Once these
3.7GB files are copied onto the computer and imported into Premiere I just
stack them onto a timeline and usually there is no glitch between file
clips. Nevertheless, once in a while there have been a few dropped frames
but since I am using multi-cameras, that is not a problem. The audio feed is
common to all cameras (it comes from a house mixer board) which I use to
sync the videos, then simply switch to a different camera during that
glitch, so the final timeline is smooth.

I also have a Cannon 7D; that one makes its segments into a file up to its
limit but doesn't create successive files, it just ends; it is better
suited for shorter segments or B-roll stuff, not full live events.

I don't understand your 2. about an index similar to Bridge.

My Sony NX5 records on SD cards. I got a special software with it to copy
the files to the computer which I use for two reasons.

1 The camera records maximum file sizes of 2Gb. When you do longer
recordings
the software will stitch the sections together to one big file. If one
copies the files with
Windows from the camera or with a card reader you will get individual
short 2Gb clips and
you loose a few frames.
2. The software creates a nice index similar to Adobe Bridge.

You will obviously only get big files when you record concerts, lectures
etc.
For "normal" videos that would not be a problem and the clips can be
copied with Windows
and used in Premiere.
