Haven't followed this thread closely, but I thought I'd chime in on this:

Nope, actually digital devices are never truly in sync unless they use some
kind of sync method, eg. a cable - you typically find this on pro cameras where
it's called 'genlock'.

The reason is simple - digital devices like cameras, audio recorders etc are
driven by a clock called a crystal (or oscillator). These clocks are not
perfect, they may run a little slower or faster in one device than in another,
and even in different models of the same device. Worse, they often change
speed a little with temperature, so they typically will speed a little the
longer the device is running. This basically means that all un-synced devices
may run at slightly different speeds and will also gradually drift in or out of
sync with one another.

So an audio recorder recording at 48kHz may actually be recording slightly
faster or slower. And a camcorder recording at 24fps may also not be exactly
capturing at 24fps. They should both be close, but if you record long enough,
they will gradually drift (how much depends on how lucky you are with any two
devices).
