When I finish an AVCHD-based 1080p video production in Premiere, I
have some difficulty playing it back in other venues. When I worked
in HDV, it was a simple matter of rendering the finished video back
to HDV tape on my camcorder, hooking up the camcorder to monitors or
projectors wherever I'm presenting videos, and then playing back the
video from the camcorder.

Now I render back to an AVCHD file, but my Canon XA10 will not accept
any AVCHD files that it didn't record itself, so I can't use my
camcorder for playback. I use a laptop, instead, playing back the
AVCHD file using VLC Media Player.

A laptop's not ideal. It's big, bulky, and occasionally stutters on
playback. It's a recent model and high-powered, so I'm not sure if
it's something running in the background or if AVCHD in 1080p still
chokes some CPUs.

I found this intriguing device when searching for solutions:

It looks like an ideal solution: plug it via HDMI into a high-res
monitor or projector, plug a self-powered USB drive into it, then let
it play back the AVCHD videos. It's so cheap, though, I'm very suspicious.

Has anyone had any experience playing back high-quality hi-res video
from a portable media player? If so, how well did it work? Any
recommendations for other units?

I guess at US$43 it's not a big risk to try, but if I can avoid
throwing it away on something that doesn't do what I want it to, I
can buy a big round of beer for friends instead.

Thanks,

Mike Boom
