Hmmm, this seems to be an open question for many of us. What I don't understand is how TSM can manage to make a SAN-attached disk device available (for storage pool backup) at the same time for multiple clients ? When a disk is assigned to one host, how is it possible to assign it also to another host ? "Switching the storage between hosts seems feasible", but concurrent ?

All you have to do is to create a shared FILE-device, and then instead of backing up to tape, backup to the FILE device. According to Tivoli, this is a supported configuration, and the information can be found on the Tivoli website. I have one Solaris client , a Solaris TSM server, and an IBM 3583 LTO tape library all connected to a SAN. We are not using a TDP yet but are backing up all files LanFree directly to tape. You cannot have a disk storage pool defined at all in the domain you are using for LanFree backups. The backup will go directly to tape unless there is a problem with the SAN then it will go to the TSM server across the LAN. Your mount points cannot exceed your defined tape drives. The documentation states to use disk storage you can use SanEnergy but we haven't looked at this. The only problem we have had is storage agent sessions that start every couple of hours and hang up on the TSM server. So far it seems they do not time out. We have been cancelling them and are working with TSM support to fix this problem. I read that a backup/archive of regular files is also possible since TSM 4.2. Now, is it correct that with LAN-Free backup : - I can't use diskpools (on the SAN), with migration (next storage pool) to the tapelibrary, over the SAN ? - You always make a "direct connection" from the backup client to the storage device which takes the backup (tape). So data transfers twice through the SAN-switch ? >From the MA8000 storage server to the client (storage agent) and then, from the client to the tape library ? - The maximum number of concurrent clientbackups is limited to the number of drives in the library('s) ? Because we can't use a SAN diskpool as destination the number of mount points is limited to the number of drives ? (disk has unlimited number of mountpoints) - If I want to do Serverless backup / use SAN diskpools I need Sanergy ? Can you give me any advices concerning LAN-Free / Serverless backup ?
