Demetrius, when we went from 3.1 to 3.7, I saw an decrease in overall backup time from 1/3 to 1/2 the time. The old code IS slow. Tell 'em (if they care about their backup window) they have to upgrade, or you could tell them you called into support on this issue, and they said you'd have to update to a supported code level before they will assist ;-)
