Apropos of the discussion about Benjamin's essay, this news item:
A complete print of Fritz Lang's 1927 film Metropolis has been found in the Museum of Cinema in Buenos Aires. Lang originally made a 3 1/2 hour film, which was shown for a short time after release, but it was almost immediately cut down to 1 1/2 hours. A collector took a copy of the original to Buenos Aires in 1928, where it has remained, eventually winding up in the archives of the Museum of Cinema. A film aficianado heard about the copy and about a screening in the 1960s, and he prevailed upon the Museum to check its archives, which eventually happened and they found the copy.
According to the AP story, "This is a movie that millions and millions of people have seen since its release and yet, in many ways, we've never seen the true film," said Mike Mashon, head of the Moving Image section of the U.S. Library of Congress in Washington.
