There's a little anecdote about Matisse, who upon finishing a picture of an interior with green shutters, was confronted by a friend who said, "But how can this be a Fauve picture without any red?" Matisse is said to have replied, "But doesn't this painting scream for red?" I don't know if this is apocryphal, but it affirms Cheerskep's point that what is left out is as important as what's put in. Many visual artists said as much through the centuries. WC
