Back in the day, yellow fog lights were the rage. Never sure if they helped or not.

Because we get fog a lot (AKA low clouds), I'm probably just as often in fog light mode, because you get too much reflection from the high beams. There is definitely a big dick complex with these guys and how many lights they can shove on something. This is the first I have heard about installing a light sensor for the LED's which would seem to be a great idea. I am not aware that any manufacturer has implemented that internally as a factory option.
