Depending on the type of motor, it can be pretty easy.  Have to bring some 
wires out of it and put them on a reversing switch.

 

I guess wrap the rope around it in the opposite direction?

It uses an AC motor. Getting one to reverse means swapping fields. Not 
impossible, but kind of a hassle. I bet it would void any warranty.
