It makes a big difference which government agency and at what level the
grant is coming from.
A lot of them will only cover capital, not operating expenses. Thing is,
if you have a plan that will cover operating expenses and make money on
its own, then you could probably get the capital without a grant.
There's also a lot of competition. I have now worked for two companies
that have applied for grants, one was awarded and one wasn't. At the
company that didn't get a grant, we had a conference call with the state
(NY) where we asked, "Hey we maxed out the scoring system, how come we
didn't get a grant?" In more political terms we were told that lots of
applicants got the maximum score, and at that point it comes down to
having support from the right people. So if you're into hobnobbing at
the golf course then you have a much better shot.....at least that's the
case in the Evil Empire State.
...there are also accounting and regulatory burdens that people complain
about, but that part isn't all that bad. Oh yeah that reminds me...get
an accountant, that makes the accounting not so bad, and they will know
things that help keep you out of legal trouble.
Ha ha what are the big problems with them? I know there have to be
problems due to the fact you are dealing with the government.
