*nods* HE will peer with you, so just use that. Buy Cogent for customer routes,
but not transit (use BGP communities to affect the change so you can turn on
full routes if need be). Get someone else for the rest.

>>What is wrong with HE and Cogent?

This is a highly subjective discussion....Valid answers are between Nothing to
Everything ! :)

Both of them are very popular due to their pricing structure... Thus are also
subject to issues related to such popularity.....
e.g. It is not un-common to see their ports over-subscribed (by the networks
they connect to), thus seeing peak time packet loss
It is not un-common to see strange routing paths, when traversing them to
connect to other networks,
In major metro areas, their routers/interconnections are under heavy stress....

While I have my own opinions on the different IP Transit providers, they all
have their areas of strength and weaknesses.

Cogent & HE are great networks, when it comes to connectivity within their
network and their customers, using them for transit can be touch and go
(greatly dependent on the geography)

Level3, extensive network, but most of the time, lights are no, no one is
home.. or it is questionable as to who is steering that ship if anyone.
XO, Older network, have great connectivity in Tier2 areas and fudging in
others.
Zayo, the Abovenet side is still very respectable, but lots of melding of their
acquisitions going on ....
GTT /(AS3257), Good network, but they are quiet discombobulated at the present,
they are actively collapsing their Nlayer & Tinet into one network...
TATA, acquired taste, best connectivity to the Eastern Part of the world (Far
East), NOC & OPS are not in the US, their US connectivity is interesting.
Hibernia, very interesting network, they peer heavily all over the world, so
lots of networks are just one hop away, however NOC is out of Europe, dealing
with Time difference and Days off does require some patience...

Having said that, this is the reason why some folks have multiple carriers in
their mix, so that they can traffic engineer to optimize the good and go around
the not so good. As an ISP, one might care less for route optimization,
however, when you start offering hosted services ( any kind of hosting
including voice) then you start paying attention to these subtle traffic
routing issues, periodic packet loss, and you want to have cleaner, closer
connections to the most common larger consumer broadband networks such as
ATT,Charter, Comcast, TWC etc.etc etc.

What is wrong with HE and Cogent? We've compared their routes to Level3,
Sprint, XO, Zayo, etc. and HE has the lowest latency routes out of Minnesota
and Cogent is better than all the other big names as well. Each POP location we
pick them up from has redundant routes out and we have had no downtime from
either provider.

Not sure if your POP locations are different but we, as well as every other
major regional ISP in our area is going to Cogent and HE for bandwidth and
we've had no problems. I'm sure this was different 3-5+ years ago but today,
they both have VERY solid networks in our opinion and their support contacts
have been very responsive with questions we've had.

Yeah that pricing for Cogent is likely “promo” pricing to get you locked in –
that’s if you like Cogent at all.

Back to the quality vs price discussion – that’s the point where I remove HE
and Cogent from the discussion … yes, have both of them in our mix and neither
are great in my opinion. If I had to choose between the two of them (and I
can’t believe I’m saying this) then HE I find better now than Cogent – a few
years ago it was the other way around.

GTT I like – lately, I’ve heard some rumblings from long term customers but
haven’t seen anything.

Level(3) I like a lot – their customer service/NOC is horrible but the network
itself is solid.

TATA – really dislike

The list goes on and on … currently we have TATA, LLNW (disconnecting soon),
GTT/TiNet, Level(3), HE, and Cogent. This does not include peering though where
there is significant growth for us…

Cogent's intro rate for 1G is $700, so I'd hold out for that even if you're
going to use a radio that only moves 100Mbps.

If the cost is the same, why not get more bandwidth so it's one less thing to
worry about when you need it?

Also, once you become a Cogent customer they are very reluctant to let you have
the 1G/$700 price.

Are you after quality bandwidth or cheap bandwidth? Not dropping names, just

The price of bandwidth is what is attracting me to the idea

He quoted. 100/100 for less than 700/mo
I'm paying that for 20/20 and almost to my max now
