Generally, really thick slabs like 2" or more, and it needs to be cured for a couple of years under tightly controlled circumstances.

That said, it's often better to do a book-matched set that is made from one to three pieces sliced from the same tree. I think that book-matched is often a much more interesting pattern, and it's easier to keep it from going wonky.
