Back in the days of morse code and other limited bandwidth
mediums abbreviations were an important and useful tool.

In todays environment, where my iphone prompts with the 
complete (correct mostly) word, they (such abbreviations)
are mostly just plain laziness.  People no longer know how
to write, much less spell and sometimes even speak correctly.
