Read "The Social Conquest of Earth" by EO Wilson. He was in denial in his final chapter when he talked about his own "faith" that space has no role in biosphere remediation, but he got the rest pretty much correct. Then bone up on O'Neill. The Amish? A nice start as one approach to a halfway house for humans but they don't really have what it takes to "stay behind."
