Conspiracy theories are wonderful. Anyone can make up any kind of bizarre
theory that's impossible to disprove and get lots of attention. Maybe
contrails really are a secret government plot to spray us with mind control
agents. Maybe the earth is flat and the gods make the sun rise and set by
pulling it across the sky in a giant chariot. For most people, that's good
enough to go about their normal lives. But if I was writing a program to
predict sunrise and sunset times, I would use a model where the earth is
round and orbits the sun. If I was an aircraft engineer, I would use a
model where kerosene reacts with oxygen to produce water vapor that
condenses to form clouds at -50 C.

For most people, it is good enough to believe that God gave them an
immortal soul. As an AI researcher, I use the model that consciousness is
indistinguishable from next token prediction.
