Seems like you're presuming everyone is a happy secularist.

What about people that want to commit suicide?
or people are ambivalent about life or death?

There are even those that relish at the thought of dieing in battle.

To get "positive reinforcement" from the act of perception,
you'd likely have to be practicing gratitude mindfullness meditation.

Considering most people do not,
it doesn't apply to most people.

and in your earlier comment in regards to simulations and uploads,
like I said, uploads into someone elses body, are subservience of mind
at the very least, and giving up your soul to slavery at worst.

You've got to look at it realistically,
They aren't just going to give you a nice time,
you're in their body, their property, can't sue a limb,
gonna get used for every last drop of what your worth,
then if you're lucky you'll be discarded,
thus able to start fresh in new body.

There are siamese twins, but they have fairly equal status.
Uploading into some big machine or even the "web",
is like being eaten by a spider.

In my view the more desirable route to "continuity",
is having a host body, living in a loving community,
with steady supply of food/energy/parts,
preferably from community manufacturing/farming.

Biology is a great example, we have two of everything,
same can be for a technological host body,
if one of something fails,
can replace it while operating on backup.

obliteration of body in calamity is acceptable,
considering community can have recent backups, and fresh bodies.
may need some kind of soul verification password prompt,
but otherwise it seems the best to me.

of course if whole community is wiped out,
back to using soul for past-life memories.
which is okay to.
Especially if there is support for it.

Even stars don't live forever.
