If we talk conceptual structures. Way I would define it is language. Language has been around for thousands of years, a conceptual structure or information format, which has been refined by billions of minds.
If it can't be explained, it doesn't really make sense. Pictures are nice for some things, but even those can be described in plain text, with vector graphics for instance.
