ah, I might have an idea about how you can accomplish your speech system goals. 
I'm not a programmer so forgive me if this sounds like a retarded statement.
option 1 you could code aq to look for speech-dispatcher, as speech-dispatcher 
is a front end for some speech subsystem stuff, and it is easy to configure and 
use.
2. you could have aq look for gnome-speech, wich probably would be better 
because I think speech-dispatcher rights every speech synth sound it makes to a 
wav file and during gameplay could be quite CPU intensive. I think gnomespeech 
is more direct.

I have been testing it on Linux for some time and not noticed any
problems.  If you get any specific errors, please let me know.

I think the whole speech subsystem will need an overhaul soon but I
can't do this until after next week due to my immanent deadline
regarding the paper on LDL (for which I really need some feedback...)

I agree that flite is awful :-).  If people are actually using the Linux
client version I will do something about it as soon as I have time :-).
