Fire extinguishers are expressly prohibited, as are any compressed gas
cylinders:

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm

Reading through there, seems like Ron might be in good shape wrt carry on basic
tools, unless one of them is a hatchet:

Do you mean the luggage never arrived? Or that someone removed the fire
extinguisher?
Remember the jet that crashed in the Florida everglades a few years ago.
Apparnetly an oxygen bottle being transported in the cargo hold blew its top
and the plane crashed.
A pressurized fire extinguisher, especially one with a plastic nozzle
could / might do the same.
So was the luggage lost? Or just the bottle? You might clarrify that to
the list.

You won't get through with anything sharp, and wrenches and screwdrivers will
get you pulled over going through security. Do yourself a favor and check
everything.

>From experience, I'd go heavy on the spares and light on the tools. You can
beg, buy, or borrow most tools anywhere, but try to find a water pump for a
1978 Alfetta on a Saturday morning in Davenport Iowa.

Bring your cell phone and AAA card.

Have fun,

Hi guys. Taking a cross country car trip soon - CA to FL - and was wondering
what I might be able to carry on the plane with me on the way to CA. I know
sharp pointy things like screwdrivers would be out, but what about wrenches,
sockets, wirestrippers, sidecut pliers, etc? Anybody done this recently?
TIA, Ron.
