My original understanding of indexing was based upon consistently pointing the gap toward the intake valve. I think I tried it once with trial and error on enough plugs to find a set that lined up the same.
Years later, I took a private tour of Warren Johnson's pro stock racing trailer with their main sponsor. I got into a plug indexing discussion. The WJ indexing method was to point the gap away from the intake valve. The objective was to minimize the chance of debris finding its way into the plug gap.
