Hi Colin,
I have a '78 Spider (which I've owned for 26 years) and mine most definitely
has an in-tank pump.
I have also seen contradictory information from vendor application guides.
I converted to Webers years ago and that little in-tank pump is all I need
to keep the carbs happy.
As rust in the tank worsened a few years ago I had to frequently pull the
pump and free the brushes. A few times the car would die, I wouldn't hear
the pump groaning so a few taps on the fuel tank sender flange is all it
took to get it going again. When I got home I pulled the pump to clean out
very small particles that would inhibit the spring loaded brushes from
making contact with the commutator. I cut the crimp at the top of the pump
and added 3 screw around the outside of the can so I could easily take it
apart and clean it when needed.
I finally gave in and bought a new fuel tank - problem-free ever since.

It is not a big job to pull back your trunk carpet and look to see if the
fuel tank sender (flange with 6 small screws) has 3 or 4 wires going to it:
1 - Black ground
2 - small gauge wires for the sender
1 - red larger gauge wire for the pump (if you have one)

So just for fun I looked at the 1978 electrical diagram and it doesn't show
an in-tank pump for a '78. Hmmm.

Subject: [alfa] Spica Fuel pump clarification

Sorry to be so confused about these things, but Can someone just tell me for
certain:
Does my 1978 Alfa Spider have one fuel pump or one fuel pump? Is there a
secondary pump in the tank or not? I keep getting contradictory information.
Thanks
Colin
