Wow, seems like I've hit something bigger than I expected... :-)  Thank you for 
the explanation, now I understand.

Wrt. insterting the context in VCL; in principle, the knowledge in what desktop 
environment the application runs should be available as soon as possible - 
because the application really _runs_ in that environment.  So I think it is OK 
to set it in VCL.  VCL is also the place where the info about the actual 
desktop environment comes from.

Application::GetDesktopEnvironment() is static, so it should be safe.  No idea 
yet if I could avoid the move thanks to BackendRef::getBackend().
