1. I've tried the procedure you gave for resetting the configuration data and
that seemed to work for a few hours, which is probably only as an illusion as 
the idle formatting doesn't kick in until you put Writer in the background.

2. I tried the "Tools.Update.Page formatting" method you gave me and it didn't 
help at all.  The CPU remained locked at 50 percent (100 percent on one of the 
two CPU's: 100 percent load on one CPU shows up as 50 percent overall system 
load in Task Manager).

3. It seems certain that it is the idle formatting that is the problem.  My 
guess is that Writer gets confused on dual-core CPU's and never exists the idle 
formatting stage again.  I think this is a bug in the idle formatting code.
