Sorry, i found the missing functionality when i actually wrote a step-by-step
description.

Wooord!
Double-click-hold: The possibility to word-wise select text by double-clicking
on a word and not releasing the button after the second press process. While
moving the mouse, the selection now snaps to the word boundaries.

add-to-selection button: the key you use when you want to create a
selection(multi-selection?) with several separated simple selections - STRG by
default. For example: hold-down STRG and double-click a few words at differing
positions in the document.

Essential it's about combining these two features.

Imagine some multi-word snippets spread across a text like "OOo rocks" and far
far away, after some linebreaks "OOo mountains", and even farther away "OOo
gravel".
Now a step by step description how I _would like_ to select all the snippets to
format them uniformly.
    - double-click-hold on "rocks", drag to the left, until the selection
encloses "OOo". Release the mouse button.
    - press add-to-selection button and hold it to augment the selection
    - double-click-hold on "mountains", drag to the left, until the selection
encloses "OOo". Release the mouse button.
    - double-click-hold on "gravel", drag to the left, until the selection
encloses "OOo". Release the mouse button.
    - Release add-to-selection button
    - Do something with OOo earthenware

At the moment I have to do the following
    - double-click-hold on "rocks", drag to the left, until the selection
encloses "OOo".
    - press add-to-selection button and hold it to augment the selection
    - double-click-hold on "mountains",
        - release add-to-selection
        - drag to the left, until the selection encloses "OOo". Release the
mouse button.
        - press add-to-selection
    - double-click-hold on "gravel"
        - release add-to-selection
        - drag to the left, until the selection encloses "OOo". Release the
mouse button.
    - Do something with OOo earthenware

Hm, a few more multi-word snippets would have dramatized the issue by
multiplying the mountains section, but i think the pattern is obvious. This
doesn't scale well.
With "getting used to", i meant that it would be more natural to continuously
press STRG, saying "let's augment it for some time", instead of repetetive
press-releases saying "erratic".

BTW: With the last sentence in the initial report i wanted to say that it
doesn't seem to be a xorg issue.... Whatever. OOo rocks!
