O.K., I can agree that some functions in Calc could be different, it is however
very disturbing in the case when a user saves a spreadsheet in .xls format and
it is not opened correctly in Excel. 

I know that the solution for those you want (or in my case - must) use Excel
could be avoiding using COUNTBLANK function and switching to for instance
COUNTA, but... is it a really good solution?

I personally would follow Excel in this case. If the function implemented in OO
is new it could be created in any way, but I would leave already existing ones.

Another possibility is the one that COUNTBLANK remains in OO as it is, but when
the spreadsheet is saved not as .ods, but as .xls the function is modified in a
way that lets the MS Office to read it correctly. There are surely a few
possibilities how to achieve it [auto-switching to COUNTA, which works the same
in OO and Excel etc.]
