As I understand it you had an issue with direct cell calculations, such as =A1*10. Have you ever encountered a problem where you need Excel's SUM() behaviour to be maintained and not fixed in the same way? If you can't point to examples where this kind of pathological behaviour is needed, then I don't think there is any case to be made to fix A1+A2 behaviour and not SUM(A1:A2).
