Full step-by-step description :

Create New Spreadsheet
Enter "Friday 26th March" in any cell
Save as XLS format
Close sheet
Open saved sheet
Select cell by clicking once on any part of it
select any font color using the "Font Color" drop down on the toolbar.
only the first part (before superscript) will change

same thing happens when using Format > Cells > Font Effects

also works if you select an area containing the cell, or a column, or a row.

I hadn't realised the XLS save / load was required as I had been working on this
spreadsheet for a while.
