I think alsaconf 0.4.3b is too old. Read the INSTALL file in the alsa-driver
directory on how to modify /etc/modules.conf (or /etc/modules, that seems a
Debian thing). Don't forget to run the ./snddevices script unless you have
a kernel with DEVFS support. You can, as root, do:
#modprobe snd-emu10k1
#modprobe snd-pcm-oss
#modprobe snd-mixer-oss
to get sound working until the next reboot (and more is needed when you
want to use the onboard wavetable synthesizer). If there are problems sent
the output from '/sbin/lsmod' and your /etc/modules.conf file to the list.
Oh, and don't forget to unmute channels and raise mixer volumes :)
