What exactly _is_ the problem? ie. what error message(s) do you get from modprobe, does anything show up in the kernel messages (do 'dmesg'), etc. > is there any huge problems with such an old kernel, coz i'm not really > keen on compiling a new one. I don't really know; if it compiled OK then I would think there's a fair chance that it should work. It's not actually that hard to compile your own kernel. The first time is the worst but after that it quickly becomes a pretty routine task. As long as you know your hardware well, you should be OK. There's a howto at http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO/index.html; I'll try to give advice on what options to choose if you need it. (Having a bootdisk handy isn't a bad idea.)
