Hi,
I saw a previous posting about this motherboard, but no final resolution. I was wondering if the issue had been resolved for the via chipset on the A7V8X-X. Here's what I tested:
The OSS proprietary driver works fine.
The alsa drivers on Mandrake 9.1 don't work. They act as if they are working, but produce no sound and give no error.
I compiled the drivers from source and again got the same results. It acts like it's working, but no sound.
Please let me know if there is a resolution, or if there is a cheap sound card you'd recommend for me to use on this PC.
The usual problem at this point is that the program you're using to play the sound needs further configuration.
* Try "play" and "aplay". If these work, then your system works.
* Open alsamixer and make certain that the "main", "mono", and "pcm" indicators are all set to high numbers, and that none of these have "MM" at the top (which would mean that they are muted). I've heard rumors that the "VIA DXS" have to be turned up high as well.
* If alsamixer is set and aplay doesn't work, try "aplay -D hw:0,1 filename.wav" to see if /dev/adsp works.
* If /dev/dsp and /dev/adsp don't exist, you haven't finished your installation. You need to either have devfs running or you need to use snddevices to create the correct devices in the /dev directory.
* If none of this works, what is the ouput of "aplay -l"?
(Geepers, I'm 3/4 of the way thru a FAQ...)
* I am using the CVS of 2003-06-23. The CVS of last week had some interesting bugs, and you might do well to make certain that you're either using the latest CVS or a relase package. (Of course the CVS of 06-23 also seems to have nteresting bugs, but they're *different* bugs...)
