Ah, ok, this means you have only one playback device, so all of my
previous tips do not apply.. 

How did you make xine use the spdif then?

you can always try to use 

aplay some_sound_file.wav

to test the different pcm devices use:

aplay -D pcm_name some_sound_file.wav

for example:

aplay -D hw:0,0 Der\ Microsoft\ Sound.wav
