[Alsa-user] intel8x0 playing simultaneous sounds

I'm using Alsa for my IBM T30 laptop's Intel 810 sound card (the 
intel8x0 driver), and I can't seem to play more than one sound at once. 
My friend with an Audigy and Alsa can, and on this same laptop Windows 
XP can.

Is this normal? Is it a hardware thing or a problem with the driver? If 
so, is there a way to enable software mixing without resorting to a 
standalone sound server like esd? On my machine esd introduces about 
half a second of latency.
