I don't know as I haven't used a 2.6 kernel...but you never know. ;-)

Then that sounds as though ALSA is working although I presume that you got the 
same verbose output as I did?

I've got to ask this. :-)

Have you turned the volume up to max in alsamixer for the surround channels?

If so, then you could have a defective sound card, although I would compile a 
2.4 kernel and reinstall ALSA first to make sure....or test the sound card in 
Windows if possible.
